Having never been down to Rockingham Motor Speedway before to watch motor racing I was quite interested to see what it would be like. My only concern was that the lens I have been using wasn’t quite enough for this circuit as it proved difficult to find a decent place to get close to the action from. However once I had a look around the circuit I found that standing on top of the paddock was great for snapping the cars flying down the start/finish straight.
Another decent place to view from was by one of the hairpins, you could sneak a few shots off without having the safety fences in your way providing the marshal didn’t get too upset.
The touring cars sounded great whilst I was stood on the paddock roofs, the side exit exhausts were pointed directly at me and echoed nicely off the banking around the circuit, that’s one the main things which I enjoy about watching motor racing live, you can’t experience the same level of sound on TV as you do stood right next to track as they blast past. The only problem I had with the circuit is that it’s difficult to get really close to the action on the corners (unless you are official media), when you make the climb up to the main grandstand and take a seat you get a fantastic view of the whole circuit but you don’t get to see anything great detail.
I’d like to go back again but try and be an official media representative if possible as the circuit is clean and still relatively new compared to the other British circuit on the tour. Below are a few of my favourite shots from the day. These include the BTCC cars, Porsche Carrera GT3 Cup cars and Ginneta G50’s which were also racing on the day.
